Japan’s Mountain Day: A Time to Get Outside

Japan is a country filled with mountains, and on August 11th, the nation celebrates them. This holiday is called Mountain Day (Yama no Hi). If August 11th falls on a weekend, the holiday moves to the following Monday. This is a day for everyone to enjoy and appreciate Japan’s amazing mountains.

How Mountain Day Began

The story of Mountain Day started a little more than a decade ago. It wasn’t something the government just decided on its own. In 2009, a group called the Japan Alpine Club first suggested the idea. They believed that with so many mountains in Japan, there should be a day just for them. Soon, many other groups that love hiking, climbing, and nature joined in.
