End of War Memorial Day 終戦記念日 しゅうせんきねんび
Remembering and Reflecting on the Horrors of War and Benefits of Peace
On End of War Memorial Day
August 15. On August 10, 1945, Japan applied for the acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration by the United States, Britain and China, and surrendered unconditionally on the 15th, ending World War II. To remember and commemorate this fateful day End of War Memorial Day was created. On this day a national memorial service has been held every year since 1988 to reflect on the mistakes and disasters of the war and to pledge peace. The Cabinet has decided to make this day “a day to mourn the dead and pray for peace” in order to inform the generations of the experiences of war and the significance of peace.
