Disaster Prevention Day 防災の日 ぼうさいのひ

Because, This Country Has A Lot Of Disasters

Disaster Prevention Day on September 1st every year is both for getting people at large to be proactive about mitigating the effects of natural disasters and a memorial time for the 1923 earthquake. In 1959 there were a series of typhoons during August and September that led to about 5,000 people being killed. So it was decided that September 1st, kind of towards the beginning of Typhoon season in Japan, was the perfect time for getting people to prepare for whatever nature throws at them. There are many public safety demonstrations and events throughout the country during this day. However, in a survey conducted by the Red Cross in 2018, less than half of Japanese in their twenties knew that there was a Disaster Prevention Day!
