Citizen’s Holiday 国民の休日 Kokumin no Kyūjitsu

Citizen’s Holiday (国民の休日 Kokumin no Kyūjitsu) is a holiday used to bridge two holidays in Japan when they occure one day apart during the work week. For example September 21st, 2026 and September 23rd, 2026 are both holidays in Japan on a Monday and a Wednesday. Tuesday, September 22nd, 2026 by itself is not a holiday so it is declared Citizen’s Holiday to create a bridge holiday allowing people to have three holidays in a row. The September 2026 example was especially advantageous as they followed the weekend basically giving people five days off; a complete Silver Week holiday! The most famous such holiday used to be the Citizen’s Holiday on May 4th that created a bridge holiday to complete Golden Week. That Citizen’s Day was eventually was rechristianed Greenery Day.
