New Year’s First Game of Kemari In Kyoto : Kemari Hajime 蹴鞠始め(京都)

Hacky Sack of the Gods!

This is the New Year’s first game of Kemari held at Shimagamo shrine in Kyoto. Kemari is an ancient game from China that is basically that uses hacks sack rules. Shrine priests and other notaries wear traditional Heian era clothing including the cocoon hat and kick a small leather ball around. They cannot use their arms or hands to keep it up. The game is totally non-competitive.
