Mibu Kyōgen 壬生狂言 みぶきょうげん

About the Mibu Temple Plays

Kyōgen are religious pantomimes performed for originally proselytizing Buddhism in Japan. Instead of yelling out the words and have people try to understand them in big crowds they decided to mime everything, even the talking parts! These plays were a big hit and the play bill was expanded to Noh and other play types. Today you can still see these plays at Mibu Dera (temple) in Kyoto. Mibu Kyōgen are performed from April 29th to May 5th every year for about ¥1,000. They are performed also in February and October, however the schedule isn’t set for certain days a year, just around certain times and the play types are more limited.
