The Eighty-Eighth Night 八十八夜 はちじゅうはちや
The Eighty-Eighth Night of Traditional Chinese Calendar : Spring
According to the old Chinese solar calendar this is one of the last nights that there could still be frost. So farmers start sowing their seeds and harvesting tea after this date, May 2nd. It is also considered an auspicious night for picking tea. The tea picked on this day is considered to be fine, and it is said that if you drink tea on this day, you will live longer. In the tea production areas of Iruma City, Saitama Prefecture, Sayama City , Shizuoka Prefecture, and Uji City , Kyoto Prefecture, in addition to new-tea services, events such as hand-made tea demonstrations and tea-picking demonstrations are also held.References
