Yoshida Fire Festival In Yamanashi Prefecture 吉田の火祭り よしだのひまつり (山梨 やまなし)
For Two Nights FujiYoshida Intentionally Transforms Itself Into a Sea of Fire!
The Yoshida Fire Festival In Yamanashi Prefecture certainly puts the “Fire” in Fire Festival. On August 26th and 27th of every year, corresponding to the end of hiking season on Mt. Fuji, the townspeople of FujiYoshida light a torch in front of every building in their city. For two evenings two portable shrines are carried along different routes through the town from FujiYoshida Sengen Shrine to a sacred resting place. And once the shrines have completed their journeys huge three meter high torches made of pine are lit all over the city giving the impression of a “Sea of Fire”. Apparently this festival is singled out as being particularly true to its roots in the traditional attempts to assuage the mighty god that is (according to some people) Fuji Mountain!References
