A Traditional Japanese Garden In One Of Tokyo’s Last Original Wood Temples

Background and History of Suikei-en Garden

The name Suikei-en comes from the elegance and quiet of the garden’s waterfall. This garden was completed in 1965 by one of Kanto’s premier landscapers, Nagai Razukan. Razukan worked on Suikei-en Garden from before World War II and continued to pour his heart into it until passed away at the age of 92. It is located to the rear of the Shibamata Taishakuten temple complex. This temple complex itself is one of the last wooden temples in Tokyo and is covered in ornate carvings. This neighborhood is famous for a serial movie character named ‘Tora san’ who is famous for his catch phrase,”It is difficult being a man!”(this was meant as he had a lot of hard work to do all the time and a lot of people who relied on him to take care of them).

Circuit-style garden

Suikei-en Garden is a circular garden with a pond at its center located in front of Daikyakuden, a Tokyo Metropolitan Government Historical Building. You can enjoy the scenery from the covered walkway that surrounds the garden.
