Mountain Day 山の日 やまのひ

Because, This Country is Mostly Made Up of Mountains

Mountain Day occurs on August 11th (except in 2020 when it was moved to August 10th to accommodate the Olympics), or the following Monday becomes a day off if it is on the weekend, almost every year, except 2020, in which it occurs the day after the Olympic Closing Ceremony (Monday, August 10th). This is a very recent holiday dating back to 2014. So, there aren’t any formal traditions other than people have the day off of work and they are supposed to use the free time to appreciate Japan’s many wondrous mountains.
