Respect for the Aged Day 敬老の日 けいろうのひ
Because They Earned Our Respect
Respect for the Aged Day!
Respect for the Aged Day is on the third Monday of September every year. There isn’t a Grandparents’ day like there is a Mother’s Day or a Father’s Day, so this kind of takes that place in Japan. People enjoy this day by going out and visiting their grandpa and grandma. Some people bring gifts. There is a definite movement among retailers to make this a gifting holiday. But just showing up and showing your appreciation to the elder family members is generally considered best. It has been held on the third Monday of September since about 2003. This is because there were a set of Happy Monday laws enacted and this holiday was shifted to that time. Originally this holiday came about in 1947 in Hyogo prefecture. A smallish city there decided to start celebrating the elderly because of all the free gifts of their wisdom. It proved to be widely popular and spread across Japan and generally had been held on September 15th.References
