SUMMARY:Kyoto Gozan Okuribi or Daimonji Festival 五山送り火　ござんおくりび（京都　きょうと）
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Spirits of Kyoto Are Really Spoiled!\nKyoto Gozan Okuribi, or Daimonji Festival is on August 16th every year at the tail end of Obon festival. At the end of Obon normally a bonfire is lit to guide the spirits of the dead back to their homes in the afterlife. But in Kyoto five mountains are set aflame in the shapes of five different kanjis. It is a huge event and people come from all around to see the mountains set on fire just after dark. Large bonfires are lit in patterns that cover the mountainsides to give the effect of kanjis the size of a mountain are written in fire floating in the night sky. The fires burn for about an hour or two before they die out. So don’t show up too late!\nReferences\nIn English\nhttps://www.jnto.go.jp/ph/spot-activity/kansai/kyoto/kyoto-gozan-okuribi/ ( https://www.jnto.go.jp/ph/spot-activity/kansai/kyoto/kyoto-gozan-okuribi/ )\nhttps://www.japan.travel/en/spot/76/ ( https://www.japan.travel/en/spot/76/ )\nIn Japanese\nhttp://www.gozan-okuribi.com/ ( http://www.gozan-okuribi.com/ )\n https://ja.kyoto.travel/event/major/okuribi/ ( https://ja.kyoto.travel/event/major/okuribi/ )\nPhoto thanks to sprklg @ Flickr.com ( https://www.flickr.com/photos/sparklig/4897616114 ).\n\nRelated Items on Amazon.co.jp\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDeep Cuts of Japonica from Rakuten Japan\n\n\nBuy me a coffee, or two, or three ;-DThanks you for your support!Click Here for PayPal\n\nAbout the AuthorPjechorin Facebook TwitterI have lived and worked with my family in Japan since 2005. For many years I have been interested in the very practical and creative side of Japanese culture. In my free time I travel around, enjoy hiking in the countryside and cities, and just generally seeing and doing new things. This blog is primarily a way for me to focus my energies and record and teach others about what I have learned by experience constructively. I am interested in urban development, and sustainable micro-economics, especially home-economics, and practical things everyday families can do to survive and thrive through these changing times.\nBuy me a coffee, or two, or three ;-DThanks you for your support!Click Here for PayPal\nOther Articles You Might Be Interested In\nNew Year’s Fukagawa Seven Gods of Fortune Pilgrimage| Stamp Rally 深川七福神　| FukagawaShichiFukuJinJanuary 2, 2026Guide to Tokyo Sea Forest Park | Umi no Mori Park | 海の森公園September 6, 2025The Museum of Salt and Tobacco Tokyo | たばこと塩の博物館March 16, 2025\n
